I continually get fake emails such as lottery sweeptstakes wins; Nigerian 419 advance fee fraud letters, fake job offers; fake paypal account verifications; fake bank account verifications, etc. I know that here (Spokane Washington) local law enforcement will not even take a complaint if you get scammed on the internet.

the internet is too out of control, no central authority figure – that’s why we love it!
Cause it’s so hard to actually catch these guys… You got to track them from state to state getting the people who were ripped off to testify ect… And most the time they are in another country and can’t be touched.
1) It doesn’t involve the local police unless your identity or credit card gets stolen. Even then it’s not up to them..
2) Why can’t you just DELETE the annoying emails? Instead of letting them get to you, just delete the ones you don’t know.
They are even more stupid than the people on the internet, so what do you expect.
From what I understand there are 2 reasons
technology changes too fast
our courts have antiquated laws that don’t include Internet crimes.
When they refuse to solve a murder when given ALL the evidence…
…Why would Internet spoofs, lottery, etc. Be of any concern to ‘em!!!
Don’t believe that “To Serve and PROTECT” hype on their vehicles!!!
I fell for one of the nigerian money scams. I actuall cashed one of the money orders they sent me. The bank cashed the first one, so I thought well the other ones must be good also. So I went to cash the other two and the police showed up. OUCH!!!!!
The police accussed me of running a fake money order buisness out of my home. Accussed me of counter fitting, turned it over to the County attorny.
I used some of the money from the first money order. Heck it was mine, with my name. So I thought.
I told the police to come in and search my home, take my computers and printers to prove I am not making countefit postal money orders.
I still do not know if charges are being pressed against me. I received a check in the mail for ten thousand dollars from a lottery co. So I called as instructed and said once I gave my credit card number to verify who I was they would contact the bank to release my winnings. I knew it was a scam. I called the bank who the check was drawn on, and they had never heard of this lottery company. They told me to call the local police, and I did. The police more or less laughted in my face and did nothing about it.
Some how someone was able to obtain one of my moms Credit Card numbers. They paid four years of college off and bought three gran worth of new clothing. The college or the store never thought it was strange. The credit card company is the one who contacted my mom to verify the charges. These charges took place thousands of miles away.
I do not even have the back of my debit card signed, and I am never asked to show ID.
I suppose the police can not take a complaint because there are so many scams out there, they would be consumed just dealing with these scams.
I now know they all sound to good to be true.
The major problem is that the criminals will be in different countries to the victims, and they will probably be using computer services from a third country. Law enforcement across borders usually involves a great deal of goodwill in addition to agreements between governments. As a result, very rarely can the enforcers do anything.
The best people to stop the problem is the Internet Service Providers. They are the ones who host the illegal activities, carry the email etc. However, this would cost money and they would rather make a bigger profit than solve the problem.
