Enlighten me asked:
How do I know if it is a genuine infection? After having scanned the PC with anti-spyware, how do I know if the computer is safe to use and completely ‘healed’ & secure. Do I need to inform my bank if I am using internet-banking?

take it to a shop and get it fixed
Download a program called Ad-aware. It is made by Lavasoft. It will detect all those horrible spyware and phishing for data progs, quarantine , and remove them.
If you are still worried, reformat your drive and start with a clean slate. That is the only true way to be safe. After that only go to your banking sites and always use a good anti virus program.
If you have a valid version of Windows (not a pirated version), download and install Microsoft AntiSpyware at the link below. I have been pleased with its ability to detect and remove spyware.
