My Mom does online banking and she uses Internet explorer(Ughh) and I don’t trust it. Plus she doesn’t really know much about viruses and I don’t want her to get scammed.

Do not recommend the free ones. Please read reviews like this one:
I would recommend Norton Internet Security 2010, I have Norton Internet Security 2009, yet it works pretty well. Once, I downloaded a file and almost instantly a pop-up appeared from Norton and said that I had a virus and it immediately fixed it too. So I put my trust in Norton.

Why anti virus software won’t always keep your computer secure and how it’s possible to steal screen shots:
Moral of the story: Keep your software patched and up to date too.
You’ll need antivirus+firewall+antispyware to be safe.
Antivirus
Firewall if you have vista it’s pretty good just make sure is enabled.
Antispyware spybot search and destroy
And about the browser it’s better to use mozilla much more secure.
Use this wizard to recommend security protection for your system:
Well to help ease your fears a person cannot do anything with your online banking info… nothing at all. Despite what ever you may hear there is nothing they can do accept see the amount of money in the account…
Myth: A person steals your online banking info they can transfer your money to another account.
Truth: All financial institutions require you to be inside of a branch location in order to make 3rd party transfers… all in systems transfers have to be to accounts that are owned by the client.(meaning that you can only move money to and from your accounts)
Myth: If someone steals your online banking info they can get your credit card numbers, debit card numbers and even account numbers.
Truth: All of you account info when using your banks online website they always hash the part of the account numbers, credit card, and debit card numbers… This is done at the financial institute before it is accessed via the web server.(meaning that only half of something is not good enough to get you ripped off.)
People it is not your online banking that is what you should be worried about… heck you can even give someone your full account number… If they don’t have the proper check number(s), routing info, and address info(all three have to be correct) they will not be able to use the info…
Now as for your credit/debit card numbers… guard them with your life. Most shady websites do not require the 3 digit number on the back of the card to make online purchases. All creditable sites will always ask for the card number, name as it appears on the card, expiration date, 3 digit code on the back of the card, and the zip code or full address that the bill is sent to…
Also look for the tell tell signs that the site your visiting is legit…
Good sites will always have you login before making a purchase or even getting your purchasing information… they will also show that they have been tested by a reputable company (Verisign, McAfee)… This will allow you to see that the site is compliant to web security standards… Hope this helps
EDIT:
Also do not store personal information on your computer. Things like user names, passwords, banking information, credit/debit card numbers, SSN numbers, or photo copies of DL’s, ID’s or birth certificates… Also any anti-virus software you choose you must run the updates and also run the updates for Windows this will help keep you system safe from potential viruses… don’t click links on emails that are in your junk mail folder… don’t open unknown emails that make it through junk mail filters… and never respond to messages claiming to be from site Administrators if you have not requested there help.

Download Avira AntiVir Personal – Free Antivirus 9.0.0.407
Consistently at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira’s AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around. Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan–for rootkits, for example–or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can ***** open “locked” files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir’s files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal–no more baby-sitting.
There are few interface changes in version 9, and older users are not likely notice anything different in the interface besides a refreshed banner logo. The main window offers a left side navigation with drop-down menus and a central pane for more detailed information. AntiVir opens to the Status menu, informing you of your last scan, your last definition file update, whether the real-time guard is active, and premium upgrade link. Events logs changes to the program and the Reports tab keeps a history of threats. Both are exportable.
The Local Protection and Administration navigation options reveal the Scanner, Guard, Quarantine, and Scheduler features. Combined with the Configuration button located at the top of the central pane, users can customize their scans as necessary. Quarantined file information is on display, with options to scan it again, restore, delete, and e-mail the file to Avira. The rebuilt heuristic engine retains the same choices from the previous version’s, and can be turned on or off in part or in full and offers three intensity levels. The scheduler offers much that other free antivirus programs don’t, and the help features are excellent, with mouse-over information on each feature.
Savvy users will notice the removal of the on-demand e-mail scan, and AntiVir is still challenging to fully uninstall. Despite these hang-ups and the nag screen that follows definition file updates, AntiVir offers such effective protection and a well-rounded set of features that as long as the updates keep coming, it’ll be our first line of defense. Which IE is she using? If she has upgraded to IE8 it is very secure and safe and named the best browser for protecting consumers against malware and phishing attacks.
It also has InPrivate Browsing which can be enabled when visiting sites with sensitive information, such as online banking websites. InPrivate browsing mode helps prevent your browsing history, temporary Internet files, form data, cookies, and usernames and passwords from being retained by the browser. You can learn more about IE8 as well as download it here:
