Only a legal US citizen can have a SSN. A legal immigrant applies to the IRS for a ITIN number. You cannot open a bank account without one or the other.
To get a social security number you must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the U.S.
Both, U.S. citizens and legal resident aliens go to the social security office in their vicinity to apply for a social security number.
1. You must have an SSN to open a bank account. To obtain SSN, you must be a US citizen or legal resident, or working on a temporary employment visa. US-born citizens’ parents must obtain their child’s SSN before the child turns 2 or the parents cannot claim them as a deduction on their tax returns. Legal immigrants must obtain SSN before they can start work, ditto for those on temporary employment visas. ITINs are for non-resident foreigners who have US income and must pay US taxes. ITINs are no longer issued to illegal aliens or others who are not authorized to to reside in the US or to obtain SSNs. So what are you doing here without SSN?
2. Washington Mutual went belly up months ago and was taken over by Chase.
