Why Should I Get an Internet Bank Account?

March 13th, 2010

Why should you get an Internet bank account? The whole concept of a bank that exists primarily on the Internet is that many of the costs and overhead incurred by traditional banks are unnecessary and if they were eliminated, the bank could pay higher interest rates on savings accounts. They could also offer high yield checking accounts, something which is almost impossible to find at a traditional bank.

The largest Internet bank is ING Direct, a subsidiary of the huge Netherlands based financial conglomerate ING. ING Direct has been experiencing impressive growth since their spin off from ING in 2000. They now boast more than 15 million customers world wide, including 6.5 million in the US. They’re not alone. Other leaders in the space are HSBC Direct, WTDirect Emigrant Direct, and E*Trade Bank.

These banks offer advantages that traditional banks just cannot match, such as interest rates on savings accounts that are 3 – 8 times what traditional banks are paying. That’s actually the primary reason people are drawn to Internet-only banks, and why you should consider one. Other advantages are unique financial services and products, such as ING Direct’s 5 year mortgages, and checking accounts that actually pay a healthy interest rate. While many traditional banks advertise free checking accounts, the Internet banks take that one better, actually paying their depositors to keep money in their checking accounts.

Other reasons to get an Internet bank account are the ability to easily pay bills and see all aspects of your account from any computer with Internet access. When these features were first offered they truly set the Internet banks apart from traditional banks, who offered little or no ability to do these things. Since that time, many traditional banks have added online banking and closed the gap in this area. Now the main advantage of an Internet bank account is the very high interest rates you can earn on your money, and really, do you need another reason to look at opening an Internet bank account? Remember, Internet banks will pay you interest on both savings and checking accounts, an advantage that leaves most traditional banks in the dust.

Internet Banking – Good for Your Business?

March 12th, 2010

Many businesses now use internet banking as they deem it to be even safer than the traditional method. Once suppliers’ details have been entered in correctly the payment goes directly to their bank account within 3 working days.

Traditional Method

With the traditional method you get to deal with real people but there is a lot that can go wrong. The teller might punch in the wrong amount or you might arrive at the wrong time and end up queuing.

You might run out of cheques or even forget your chequebook at the office when you most need it.

Once you have written a cheque and mailed it you are relying on the post office to deliver your mail on time and to the right address. They often get it wrong.

You need to wait for a statement to find out your account balance unless you are brave and have hours to kill whilst you listen to “your business is very important to us, please hold while we transfer you to the next available operator.”

Opening Hours

With the traditional method you are tied down to normal working hours. Online banking is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day as long as you have access to the internet.

With internet banking you cut out the middle man and transfer the funds directly to your supplier’s bank account. It is also possible to access your bank statements day or night without having to wait weeks / months for the banks to deal with your request.

Speed

Bank transfers are often dealt with speedier than traditional banking. Some of my transactions definitely happen quicker through online banking. I can also access all my accounts from one secure site. You can check your bank statements for any period in the past without having to search for a long lost file!

Offers

Some banks now offer special deals for their online business customers only. It is possible to get cheaper loans with lower setup costs, credit cards with lower transaction charges and applying for a loan online is also quicker.

Security

Be very careful with your login details and do not write down your password anywhere.

Always log out once you have finished your business and regularly run anti-spyware software on your computer. Spyware tries to monitor your usage of your computer and collect your personal information and use it against you.

There have been breaches of internet banking in the past but now online banking technology is more sophisticated and secure.

Suitability

Internet banking might not suit you if you like to see who you are dealing with. If you are a “technophobe” & feel insecure about doing large transactions online then it is definitely not right for you.

On the other hand if you **** queuing, despise the time it takes for duplicate statements and **** being bogged down by traditional opening hours then the convenience of online banking can not be beaten.

Books Online About Internet Banking Can Help With Questions

March 9th, 2010

There seem to be few that the average person can read and understand. With a little investigation at your local bookstore and online, you can find some fairly recent books that have something to say to the average consumer about internet banking.

Scams and Swindles: Phishing, Spoofing, ID Theft, Nigerian Advance Schemes Investment Frauds. There are many how-to books with instructions about knowing when you are being taken for a ride.

If you read this book, you will get information from crooks who have scammed, people who have been scammed, and cops who have investigated scams. You will be given worksheets and detailed reports on recognizing internet banking fraud. It is a must-have book for anyone who wants to understand how frauds work.

In some books, the author discusses how internet banking services can be used to create wealth. The usual financial concepts are discussed. Understanding net worth and how to accumulate cash are important ones. Different types of investment vehicles are also mentioned.

The difference in some books is that it is all related to internet banking. It is all designed to make it easier to run your finances from your home computer. This not only includes your internet banking savings accounts. It includes stocks and bonds, as well. It is well worth the investment. Some books shed light on how internet banking may become more popular in developing countries. They explain that mobile devices are much preferable to installed devices in such countries.

This is because, for anything that involves installation, like a satellite or cable service for internet, people have to wait quite awhile. The early users of the internet in developing countries will be those who have wireless internet. It stands to reason that these people will use their computers for internet banking as well. Some books give a studious report on banking issues that affect the world. They include discussions of internet banking.

You can also order articles to download from the internet. One article discusses the implications of internet banking on mortgage lending. Another article claims that internet banking has forever changed mortgage banking.

It takes diligence to find pertinent information on internet banking. Much of the information is too outdated to be of any usefulness. A lot of it is written in complex banker’s language and words only an internet guru would love. However, there are some books that are interesting to read about the subject of internet banking.
